Iran's Central Bank Sanctioned: $130M in USDT Frozen on TRON — Flagged 17 Minutes Early

OFAC sanctioned Iran's Central Bank (Bank Markazi). Tether then froze $130.1M in USDT across four TRON wallets — and USDTBanList's cross-chain ban-candidate alerts flagged all four roughly 17 minutes before the freeze.

$130M in USDT Frozen as OFAC Sanctions Iran's Central Bank

On July 14, 2026, the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) added Bank Markazi Jomhouri Islami Iran — the Central Bank of Iran — to its SDN sanctions list, naming four TRON (TRC-20) wallet addresses. Within the hour, Tether blacklisted all four on-chain, freezing a combined 130,097,237 USDT (~$130.1 million).

USDTBanList flagged every one of these wallets as a ban candidate roughly 17 minutes before Tether froze them — giving our premium subscribers advance warning on a nine-figure freeze.

Timeline (UTC)

  • 20:24–20:29 — Tether blacklists the Ethereum-side twin wallets (same underlying keys; they held no balance).

  • 20:45:01 — USDTBanList's cross-chain engine flags all four TRON wallets as ban candidates and alerts premium subscribers.

  • 21:01:57 — Tether submits the freeze transaction on TRON.

  • 21:02:57 — The freeze is confirmed on-chain. $130.1M locked.
  • That is roughly a 17-minute head start between our alert and the freeze — enough time to halt an incoming payment, move counterparties off the wallet, or flag exposure before the funds became untouchable.

How We Saw It Coming: Cross-Chain Ban Candidates

Large sanctioned entities often control twin wallets — the same private key produces a matching address on both Ethereum and TRON. When an issuer freezes one chain, the other is very frequently next.

USDTBanList monitors both networks in real time. The instant a wallet is blacklisted on one chain, our engine looks for its twin on the other and — if that twin is still active — flags it as a ban candidate. Here, Tether froze the Ethereum addresses first; we immediately flagged the four TRON twins, which were carrying the entire $130 million. Seventeen minutes later, Tether froze them too.
